Each year BSPM recognizes the hardworking Graduate Students at home in our department. This year, we were fortunate enough to award just under $10,000 to these outstanding students!
The William Brown Professional Development Award: In honor of late CSU Professor Bill Brown, this award is presented by his wife, Betty Brown, to deserving students with the intention to help pay for travel to attend presentations and conferences.
- Theresa Barosh: Attending the Ecological Society of America (Portland, OR) to present some of her research to collaborators.
- Megan Vahsen: Attending the Evolution meeting (Portland, OR) where she will be giving a presentation on how “Rapid evolution promotes population growth and expansion of colonizing populations.”
- Neeta Soni: Attending the Weed Science Society of America Annual Meeting to present her recent research on Kochia scoparia glyphosate resistant populations.
Boris Sr. and Johanna Kondratieff Memorial Award: The award is granted to students to assist with research and travel costs associated with their degree. Preference is given for students involved in international activities.
Jesse Dubin Travel Award: For students who show strong dedication to the study of Integrated Pest Management.
- Both the Boris Sr. and Johanna Kondratieff Memorial Award and the Jesse Bubin Travel Award were received by Anita Kuepper: Attending the International Plant and Animal Genome conference (San Diego, CA) to present a poster on her project on 2,4-D Resistant Indian hedge mustard.
Monty and Jeanice Harrison Graduate Student Scholarship in Plant Pathology: Established for students dedicated to the field of plant pathology, Anna Bossa Castro received this award for her continued commitment to high levels of research coupled with travel to field and cooperator sites all over the world.
Karl K. Kinney Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship in Entomology: Created for students dedicated to the field of entomology, this scholarship went to Christopher Verdone for his passion for research, travel, and field work.
Hawksworth Memorial Scholarship: Given to students who demonstrate high academic achievement and a passion for plant pathology or forest management, this scholarship was gifted to Rachael Sitz for her impressive publication list, high level or research experience, and commitment to extension service around the state.
Ynez Morey and Chuck Reagin Memorial Entomology Scholarship: For students dedicated to entomology, this scholarship was presented to Theresa Barosh for her high level of research, education and mentoring, and community service.
Louis G. Davis Entomology Scholarship: Presented to a student who shows a strong dedication to the field of entomology, that scholarship goes to Megan Vahsen for her impressive research, publications, presentations, and outside service.
Tex Baker Plant Pathology Scholarship: Awarded to students with a passion for Plant Pathology, this scholarship was awarded to Eric Patterson for his efforts as Todd Gaines Lab Manager as well as his honorable accomplishments mentoring undergraduate students.
BSPM Outstanding Master of Science Student Scholarship: Established to honor an amazing student in either entomology, plant pathology, or weed science; this year’s recipient was Dean Pettinga who is working under Todd Gaines with impressive research, industry and professional presentation record, and provisional patent on his own work.
Bert Bohmont Graduate Student Award for Extension Education: Presented to a student who has demonstrated high academic achievement in Plant Pathology, Entomology, or Weed Science; this award went to Curtis Hildebrandt for his commitment to research and extension outreach activities.
Robert Zimdahl Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Weed Science: In recognizing a student with strong dedication to the field of weed science, this award was presented to Derek Sebastian due to his high levels of research and commitment to education and extension which has resulted in an impressive list of publications and presentations.
Robert Zimdahl Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Pest Ecology: Directed to students who have an intense dedication to the field of pest ecology this award went to Stacy Endriss for her many accomplishments in outreach, mentoring, and professional development workshops.
Howard Schwartz Award for Excellence in Integrated Pest Management : This award is presented to a student who is dedicated to research and extension work in any BSPM related field here in Colorado. This was given to Sarah Miller for her impressive level of research and other accomplishments that have helped her earn three different fellowships.
Ralph Baker Graduate Student Award for Research Excellence: Created for a student who displays a high caliper of work in their research through BSPM, Grey Monroe has received this scholarship for two consecutive years for his outstanding work that has led to multiple publications as well as over $100,000 in research awards and fellowships.
BSPM Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award: This award is intended for a student who clearly demonstrates excellence in teaching, student outcomes, classroom innovation, and pedagogical engagement. This award was presented to Dhaval Vyas who received remarkable praise for his teaching by both professors, advisers, and students.
