Scholarships & Awards

The BSPM Department offers annual scholarships and awards to current graduate students. They are awarded in December at the Winter Awards Ceremony. Click here to see last year’s winners. Please look for an email each year in late October, from the Graduate Student Coordinator, for information on how to apply.

Bert Bohmont Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Extension Education

Eligibility:  Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently enrolled in a graduate degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or students whose advisors are faculty members of BSPM.

Criteria:  The candidate must have demonstrated high academic achievement and ability; dedication to entomology, plant pathology, weed science, or related field; demonstrated excellence in extension activities such as presentations at workshops or field days; participation in departmental and university activities; and proven ability to help and work cooperatively with others. This award is $500.

BSPM Graduate Student Teaching Award

Eligibility: Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University, is currently a student of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or is advised by a BSPM faculty member, and have been or are currently a teaching assistant.

Criteria: The candidate must submit copies of teaching evaluations and written comments,  a one page or less statement describing their teaching philosophy, and the Graduate Student Annual Evaluation form. This scholarship is $1000.

BSPM Outstanding Master of Science Student Scholarship

Eligibility: Any student who has completed at least 20 credit hours of graduate work at Colorado State University with a GPA of 3.5 and is currently enrolled in a Master’s of Science Departmental graduate degree program.

Criteria: The candidate should possess a dedication to the field of entomology, plant pathology, or weed science. The candidate should also have demonstrated excellent academic achievement; exhibited a high potential for research, extension, or teaching accomplishments; participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and willingness to help and work cooperatively with others. This scholarship is $500.

Frank Hawksworth Memorial Graduate Student Scholarship

Eligibility: Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management, the Department of Forest Science, or students whose advisors are faculty members of BSPM.  Field of study should be in tree disease management or forest ecosystem management.

Criteria: The candidate must have demonstrated high academic achievement and ability; dedication to the field of plant pathology or forest management; participation in           departmental and university activities; and proven ability to work cooperatively with others.  This scholarship is $1000.

H. Jesse Dubin Travel Award in Honor of Peace Corps

Eligibility:  Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. program with an emphasis in Integrated Pest Management in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or an interdepartmental graduate group with a major professor in BSPM.

Criteria:  The candidate should possess a dedication to the field of integrated pest management.  The candidate should also have demonstrated excellent academic achievement; exhibited a high potential for research, extension or teaching accomplishments; participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and willingness to help and work cooperatively with others.  This award is $500.

Howard Schwartz Award for Excellence in Integrated Pest Management

Eligibility:  Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. program with an emphasis in Integrated Pest Management in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or an interdepartmental graduate group with a major professor in BSPM.

Criteria: The candidate should possess a dedication to research and extension work emphasizing the biology and management of plant pathogens, insects and/or weeds relevant to Colorado and the surrounding region. The candidate should also have demonstrated excellent academic achievement; exhibited a high potential for research, participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and willingness to help and work cooperatively with others.  This award is $500.

Johanna and Boris Kondratieff Sr. Memorial Graduate Student Scholarship for Educational and Professional Development

Eligibility: The award recipient must be a graduate level student enrolled in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management and/or the interdepartmental Graduate Degree Program in Ecology and maintain an overall 3.0 GPA.

Criteria:  The student financial assistance shall provide general support for graduate school, research projects, and other educational expenses. Examples may include travel to and participation in professional society meetings and special workshops, as well as other related student experiences.  Preference will be given to international students. This award is $500.

Karl Kinney Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship in Entomology

Eligibility:  Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently enrolled in an entomology graduate degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management.

Criteria:  The candidate should possess a dedication to the field of entomology.  The candidate should also have demonstrated excellent academic achievement; exhibited a high potential for research, extension, or teaching accomplishments; participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and   willingness to help and work cooperatively with others. This scholarship is $500.

Louis G. Davis Scholarship

Eligibility: Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. program majoring in Bioagricultural Sciences.

Criteria: The recipient will be in good academic standing, with a GPA above 3.0 and will have a career interest in entomology.

Monty and Jeanice Harrison Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship in Plant Pathology

Eligibility:  Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently enrolled in a plant pathology graduate degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management.

Criteria: The candidate should possess a dedication to the field of plant pathology.  The candidate should also have demonstrated excellent academic achievement; exhibited a high potential for research, extension, or teaching accomplishments; participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and willingness to help and work cooperatively with others. This scholarship is $500.

Ralph Baker Graduate Student Award for Research Excellence

Eligibility: Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently enrolled in a graduate degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or students whose advisors are faculty members of BSPM.

Criteria: The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in research while a graduate student at Colorado State University. The candidate should possess a dedication to entomology, plant pathology, weed science or related field and exhibit a high level of academic achievement; participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and willingness to help and work cooperatively with others. This award is $500.

Robert L. Zimdahl Outstanding Graduate Student Awards in Weed Science and In Pest Ecology

EligibilityAny student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently enrolled in a weed science graduate degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or any student who is co-advised in their graduate program by a member of the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management.

Criteria: The candidate should possess a dedication to the field of pest ecology. The candidate should also have demonstrated excellent academic achievement and exhibited high potential to contribute to science. This award is $750.

Tex Baker Plant Pathology Scholarship

Eligibility: Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently enrolled in a graduate degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or students whose advisors are faculty members of BSPM.

Criteria: The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in research while a graduate student at Colorado State University. The candidate should possess a          dedication to entomology, plant pathology, weed science or related field and exhibit a high level of academic achievement; participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and willingness to help and work cooperatively with others. This award is $500.

William M. Brown Professional Development Award

Eligibility: Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. program with an emphasis in Integrated Pest Management in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or an interdepartmental graduate group with a major professor in BSPM.

Criteria: The candidate should possess a dedication to the field of integrated pest management. The candidate should also have demonstrated excellent academic achievement; exhibited a high potential for research, extension or teaching accomplishments; participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and willingness to help and work cooperatively with others. This award is $500.

Ynez Morey and Chuck Reagin Memorial Entomology Scholarship

Eligibility:  Any student who has completed at least one semester of graduate study at Colorado State University and is currently enrolled in a graduate degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management or students whose advisors are faculty members of BSPM.

Criteria:  The candidate should possess a dedication to entomology and exhibit a high level of academic achievement; participated actively in departmental and/or university activities; and demonstrated an ability and willingness to help and work cooperatively with others. This scholarship is $1000.
